I recently had the opportunity to submit some makeup tips to lifestyle website TotalBeauty.com for an article about how to achieve fuller-looking lips, which went live this week:

You can read the article here, and here is the full list of tips and product recommendations I submitted:

  1. Don’t go overboard overlining the lips with a dark shade – it can look dated and clownish. Instead, choose a lip pencil close to your natural lip shade and sketch along the very edge of your natural lip line, emphasizing the v-shape at the top and the fullness of the bottom lip all the way to the outer edges (which often get lost). Finish by filling the entire lip with the pencil and apply lipstick on top, blotting for a long-lasting finish. If you choose to go beyond your lip line, do so only subtly, and not around the entire perimeter of the mouth as it can begin to look fake.Liz’s product picks: MAC lip pencil in “Whirl,” Make Up For Ever aqua lip pencil in “02C”
  2. Use a slightly lighter shade of lipstick in the center of the bottom lip to make it appear more prominent. You can also restrict shimmer and/or gloss to this part of the lip to make it catch the light and appear poutier.Liz’s product picks: FACE atelier lip glaze in “Peach,” Tarte lipsurgence lip gloss in “Blushing Bride”
  3. Dot a touch of highlight (a champagne, vanilla, or gold eyeshadow with finely-milled shimmer will do the trick) just above the center of your top lip – this will catch the light and make your lips appear fuller.Liz’s product picks: Yaby eyeshadow in “Seashell,” Fortunate Face Minerals luster in “Golden”
  4. Avoid overly dark colors as they can make your lips appear to recede – instead, choose a shade similar to the color your lips blush naturally: roses, berries, and caramel tones (depending on your natural skin tone) are more effective.Liz’s product picks: Laura Mercier lipstick in “Spiced Rose,” Bobbi Brown lipstick in “Sandwash Pink”
